Session Overview:
In AHPRA’s 2020-2021 Annual Report, the regulator states receipt of a total of 1,035 notifications against registered dental practitioners.

While the fundamental reasons vary, they often involve cost, procedural issues, a practitioner’s lack of empathy or inadequate consent. Feelings of not being heard, seen, or involved in decisions relating to their care can also drive patients to make notifications against their dental practitioner. This is also mirrored in AHPRA’s data, with 57.5% of notifications from 2021 involving clinical care, 7.9% communication issues and 4.1% relating to professional boundary transgressions.

In this session, MIPS’ Dental Legal Advisor, Dr Gerard Clausen, Specialist Prosthodontist, discusses the most common causes that lead patients to report practitioners to AHPRA and how you can minimise your legal risk.

Learning outcomes

At the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Discuss the most common reasons of complaints in dental care
  • Identify strategies to communicate effectively to provide quality care
  • Discuss what to do if you receive a notification to minimise your legal risk
